(152341) Rupesnigra Main-belt Asteroid
Discovered on 22 October 2005 by CSS at Catalina.
Rupes Nigra is a legendary island first mentioned in the lost 14th-century book Inventio Fortunata as a magnetic rock at the North Pole. It was an attempt to explain why all compasses point north. Mercator included Rupes Nigra on his maps, describing it as a towering black cliff. The legend inspired early generations of Arctic explorers.Naming citation (WGSBN Bull. 6, #7, 8), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
