Mirel Birlan (b. 1963), of the Paris Observatory, Meudon, began his career in 1991 as an astronomer at the Bucharest Observatory. He has conducted observing campaigns on minor solar-system bodies and has been involved in ground-based science of Rosetta mission asteroid targets. The name was suggested by M. A.
