Asteroids named after people called Christiane

(4732) Froeschle

Named in honor of Claude and Christiane Froeschlé, Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur, Nice. Husband and wife, the Froeschlés have both contributed to our understanding of the dynamics of minor bodies (minor planets, comets, meteorites and dust particles) by numerical analysis of their orbital evolution. Claude was one of the first to investigate ergodic and chaotic regions in mean-motion resonances with Jupiter. He tested the so-called gravitational hypothesis for the formation of the Kirkwood gaps and showed that meteor streams situated in mean motion resonances may break into separate parts. He also modeled the dynamical evolution of short-period comets using a Monte Carlo method. Christiane was one of the first to explore orbital evolution at secular resonances. She has shown that the principal secular resonances are good candidate sources for meteorites. Citation provided by H. Scholl at the request of the discoverer.Discovered 3 May 1981 by E. Bowell, Anderson Mesa

(13286) Adamchauvin

Christiane Adam Chauvin (b. 1952), of Paris Observatory, is responsible for research relationships with the European Community. The name was suggested by M. Fulchignoni.Discovered 20 August 1998 by LONEOS, Anderson Mesa

(15811) Nusslein-Volhard

German biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (b. 1942) intensely studied the development stages of the fly Drosophila melanogaster and shared the 1995 Nobel prize for medicine for her epoch-making discoveries of the fundamental genetic steering mechanisms of embryogeny.Discovered 10 July 1994 by F. Borngen, Tautenburg

(178014) Meslay

Christiane Meslay (1957–2019) was the computer engineer who in 1996 introduced the first local ethernet network at the Dax (code 958) observatory. This allowed the discovery of C/1997 J2 via remote control of the telescope and CCD.Discovered 1 September 2006 by C. Rinner, Ottmarsheim

(256369) Vilain

Christiane Vilain (b. 1949) is a retired researcher and teacher of physics and the history of physics, who now works on conceptual questions dealing with mechanics, relativity, and the relations between experience and theory. She worked at the University Denis Diderot (Paris7).Discovered 20 December 2006 by B. Christophe, Saint-Sulpice
