(15732) Vitusbering Main-belt Asteroid

Discovered on 15 November 1990 by E. W. Elst at La Silla.

Danish navigator and explorer Vitus Bering (1681-1741) worked in the service of the Russian navy. During the second Kamchatka Expedition (1733-1743) he reached the west coast of Alaska. On the way home his ship was stranded, and he and his crew had to spend the winter on a small, bare island, where many of them died.Naming citation (20060613/MPCPages.arc), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
