(26857) Veracruz Main-belt Asteroid
Discovered on 19 February 1993 by E. W. Elst at Haute Provence.
Veracruz is a major port on the Gulf of Mexico, founded in 1519 by the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés. In 1769 French astronomer Chappe d'Auteroche, on his way to San José, suffered great difficulty in reaching the port by boat, due to extremely heavy stormy weather, a phenomenon typical for this region in the Mexican Gulf.Naming citation (WGSBN Bull. 3, #10, 5), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
