Discovered on 8 September 1942 by Y. Vaisala at Turku.

Named for a town, parts of which date back to the stone age, in the lake district of central Finland. Known for the spa Runni, monuments there memorialize important events in Finnish history. Iisalmi was also the home of famous writers, including Eero Salmelainen, who compiled the celebrated collection Suomen kansa satuja i tarinita (Finnish Folk Tales and Stories), published during 1852–1866.Naming citation (WGSBN Bull. 5, #9, 5), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
