(9965) GNU Main-belt Asteroid

Discovered on 5 March 1992 by Spacewatch at Kitt Peak.

GNU is the recursive acronym for “GNU is not Unix”. The GNU Project was created by Richard Stallman in 1983. It enabled computer programmers to trade and improve on each others' ideas freely. Linux and academic computing owe much of their functionality to the firm foundations of GNU software.Naming citation (WGSBN Bull. 1, #11, 5), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
