Discovered on 22 September 1908 by J. Palisa at Vienna.

Until 1580 the ancestors of the Defoy family were landowners at Foy, near Bastogne, now in Belgium. This minor planet specifically honors Ilse Defoy (1892-1947), wife of Christoph Schubart and mother of Heidelberg astronomer Joachim Schubart, who found the identifications involving this minor planet.Naming citation (20001013/MPCPages.arc), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
