Discovered on 18 November 1990 by E. W. Elst at La Silla.

The British Admiralty, very much impressed by his book A New Voyage Round the World, gave him the command of a Royal Navy ship which led to important discoveries in Western Australia.Naming citation (MPC batch dated 2015-06-02), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
