(8238) Courbet Main-belt Asteroid

Discovered on 26 March 1971 by van Houten, C. J., van Houten-Groeneveld, I., Gehrels, T. at Palomar.

Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was an autodidact who studied nature and the great paintings in the Louvre. Initially his paintings were not accepted in the salons of Paris; he then held his own exhibition, which was a great success. His harmonious colors influenced the French and German Impressionists.Naming citation (19990402/MPCPages.arc), IAU / Minor Planet Center, via NASA/JPL
